NYK has started a new car transport service 'Ruffles Ao Dai RORO Express (REX)' linking Hai Phong in Northern Vietnam with Ho Chi Minh and Laem Chabang (near Bangkok). On October 8, the NYK-operated car carrier Modern Link arrived in Hai Phong for the first call. And the ceremony to commemorate was held attended by the top managements of the Port of Hai Phong, Tan Vu Terminal, among others.
The previous service for Northern Vietnam called at the port of Cai Lan is once a month. Now the new service calls the port of Hai Phong, which is close to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, and increases the number of calls to twice a month. NYK will attempt to accommodate demand for the transportation of finished cars to Vietnam, a country experiencing strong economic growth, and to make use of the knowledge and expertise that we have gained through other services in the ASEAN region to provide high quality, competitive services.

In a recent speech at the U.N., NYK was the only Japanese company mentioned to be promoting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs.* NYK does this by encouraging creative solutions through innovation and business model changes to positively address issues that challenge our society.
The speech was made during #GlobalGoals Week at the U.N. headquarters in New York during the 71st session of the U.N. General Assembly that was held from September 13, by Remi Eriksen, a group president and CEO of DNV GL, a classification society based in Norway.
The NYK initiatives mentioned included the following:
The NYK Group, as a good corporate citizen, will continue to implement creative solutions by taking an active role in social issues through dialogue with stakeholders to realize a sustainable society.
* SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)
The '2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development' was adopted at the U.N. Summit in September 2015 and established SDGs to realize a global society by 2030. In Japan, a department to promote SDGs was launched in May 2016 and comprises the prime minister (as general manager) and all Cabinet ministers.
Speech for the achievement of SDGs
DNV GL has published a report titled 'Future of Spaceship Earth,' which examines the likelihood of achieving the 17 SDGs by 2030 and private sector solutions for achieving these goals. For each SDG, the report highlights a company pioneering progress toward the goal. 'Future of Spaceship Earth'

On September 30, a new coal carrier, Noshiro Maru, was delivered at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. (Saikai city, Nagasaki prefecture). The new coal carrier is the third ship to take the Noshiro Maru name since the first Noshiro Maru began transporting coal for Tohoku Electric Power Co. Inc. 23 years ago.
A delivery and naming ceremony was held at the shipyard on the same day and attended by Mr. Makoto Kaiwa, chairman of Tohoku Electric Power; his wife; and NYK Chairman Yasumi Kudo. The vessel is named after Noshiro terminal in Akita prefecture, the destination for coal that is transported mainly from Australia and Indonesia to generate electricity for the Tohoku district of Japan.
Compared to the standard 70,000-ton Panamax bulk carrier, the new Noshiro Maru has a wider beam and a shallower draft, improving transportation efficiency.
In accordance with its ???More Than Shipping 2018??? medium-term management plan, NYK will continue its efforts to make use of creative solutions to provide stable and economical coal transport.
