The NYK-TDG Maritime Academy (NTMA), which NYK operates in the Philippines, successfully conducted an international short-term student-exchange program with maritime schools in Japan during the months of August and October 2016.
The program was organized as part of the NYK Mirai Project.* From August 31 to September 10, nine students from the Hiroshima, Yuge, and Oshima colleges of the National Institute of Technology travelled to the Philippines to participate in study and activities at NTMA. And four days from October 9, ten students from NTMA visited the National Institute of Technology???s Yuge College. During the visits, students attended classes and drill training together, interacting with one another in English, and left with greater stimulation and motivation.
NYK will continue this project to encourage young adults to gain a global perspective and to spark interest in the seafaring life.

This project consists of a series of activities that nurture greater awareness of maritime affairs and the seafaring life among Japan???s youth so that they can develop interest in the maritime industry and consider careers at shipping companies. The project was launched at the end of 2014.

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK; head office: Tokyo; president: Tadaaki Naito) and Yusen Logistics Co. Ltd. (YLK; head office: Tokyo; president: Kenji Mizushima) jointly conducted their 2016 Global NYK/YLK Week from September 5 to 9 in Japan. Thirty-two overseas staff members including staff from Japan were nominated from the Group's global business bases to attend the program.
This training program has been jointly held by NYK and Yusen Logistics since 2012 to deepen interchange among the participants across national, division, and company boundaries and further strengthen links and networks within the Group.
This year's theme was 'Be Innovative!' The participants were first given lectures about each business segment's strategy based on the NYK Group's medium-term management plan and then exchanged opinions about the enhancement of competitiveness through a heightened understanding of the NYK Group Values.* These lectures and discussions allowed the participants to deepen their understanding of the NYK Group's business and initiatives from many aspects. Those participants were then divided into four groups, and after active discussions on NYK Group issues, each group made a presentation on the theme of 'Be Innovative!' to board members including the presidents of NYK and YLK, allowing the groups to have an impact on the Group's business management.
At the end of the week, the participants traveled to Kyoto for a day of Japanese culture, including Zen meditation, helping the group to reflect deeply on the benefits of their week together. It is expected that all participants will take their experiences from the five-day program back to their offices to share with their colleagues.

THE Alliance Announces Plans for Its Competitive Product
31 services covering all East West trade lanes with short transit times / Fast shuttle services / Dedicated Middle East loop / 240 modern and most efficient ships / Comprehensive port coverage with over 75 ports in Asia, North Europe, the Mediterranean, North America and the Middle East
The members of THE Alliance announced today the details of the plan for their product starting from April 2017. THE Alliance plans to deploy a fleet of more than 240 modern ships in the Asia /Europe, North Atlantic and Trans-Pacific trade lanes including the Middle East and the Arabian Gulf/Red Sea. The start of THE Alliance as the most integrated liner shipping consortia is scheduled for April 2017 (subject to completion of all relevant regulatory requirements).
???The product of THE Alliance is a milestone which will significantly improve the service offering for all shippers on the East West trade lanes???, said the member carriers Hapag-Lloyd, ???K???Line, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Nippon Yusen Kaisha and Yang Ming in a statement. The product will be characterized by fast transit times, a broad port coverage and deployment of modern and most efficient ships. ???Our best ship for the loop principle and dedicated shuttle service design are the basis for one of the most competitive products available in the market???, the member lines said. The comprehensive network of 31 services would connect more than 75 major ports throughout Asia, North Europe, the Mediterranean, North America, Canada, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, Indian Sub Continent and the Middle East with fast transit times and a wide range of direct port-port-connections.
The product of THE Alliance will feature eight services in the Asia/Europe trade including three services covering the important Mediterranean market. One dedicated service will cater for customers in the Middle East, connecting the key ports of China, South Korea and South East Asia with Dammam, Jubail and an Arabian Gulf hub port. 16 joint services will be operated by THE Alliance members on the Trans Pacific trade. Six loops will serve the North Atlantic trade covering a wide range of North European and Mediterranean ports as well as those in the US, Canada and Mexico. The base-plan port rotations of the total 31 services will be as follows:
