The international Transport and Logistics Service Provider NYK, has awarded its Environmental Award ???Captain Eco 2012??? to Container Maintenance Repair Hamburg GmbH (CMR), a specialist for the maintenance and repair of reefer containers. The award was presented by Dennis Dannfeld, Team Leader Port Operations and Jürgen Koppelmann, Team Leader Maintenance & Repair/Senior Technical Inspector in the name of NYK Line in Hamburg to Kai Tiedemann, General Manager of CMR.
CMR received the award because the company rates environmental protection very highly and acts in an environmentally friendly manner with all its services.
The disposal of cargo remains from empty containers, or of lashing material is carried out according to higher standards than the already stringent German environmental regulations. The washing water accumulated during the high-pressure cleaning of containers is first conditioned twice then cleaned of heavy metals and solvents in a third cleaning run before going into Hamburg's waste water system. So that all environmental requirements are complied with, there are monthly inspections on the premises in Wilhelmsburg by Hamburg's Environmental Authority.
First environmental award for CMR
Kai Ove Tiedemann, General Manager of CMR, is pleased about the award: ???This is our first environmental award and it will have a place of honour. Environmental protection and sustainability is taken very seriously at CMR. This also concerns the disposal of cooling agents used in reefer containers which we dispose of in an environmentally compatible fashion with evidence control. Defective parts of the reefer containers are also turned over to environmentally compatible recycling.???
CMR exclusively uses latest generation reach stackers and forklifts, which also has a positive effect on the company???s CO2 record.
The environmental commitment, in addition to the smooth processes, is also a reason why NYK has been engaged in a trusting collaboration with CMR for more than thirty years. The CMR depot in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg was the first Off-Dock Depot in Hamburg???s harbour for NYK and is the main depot for reefer containers in the northern German region for NYK-Line today. In total, around 11,000 empty containers are moved there on a daily basis.
NYK can handle special customer wishes such as, humidity control, nitrogen supply and transport in a controlled atmosphere, as well as special cleaning certificates required for the transport of pharmaceutical products, in collaboration with its partner CMR.
The NYK Group has ambitious goals for sustainable handling of resources. Safety and preservation of the environment as well as the use of new technologies and reducing CO2 emissions have highest priority. With the NYK Captain Eco Award, NYK Line (Germany) annually honours service providers who commit themselves in particular to the improvement of the environmental balance within the NYK transport chain. The Captain Eco Award was produced from domestic timbers by people with impairments of the Lebenshilfewerk Neumünster and visualises all environmental activities of NYK Line (Germany).
