Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of NYK Group Europe Ltd, Svein Steimler, will receive an honorary degree fromSouthamptonSolentUniversityfor his outstanding accomplishments in the maritime industry.

He will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Maritime Operations at a ceremony at Southampton's Guildhall on Thursday 22 November.

Svein Steimler started his shipping career after leaving the Norwegian Navy 35 years ago. Since entering the industry, he has held a variety of senior positions within various ship broking and ship owning companies.

In 1996 he was appointed Executive Vice President of NYK Bulkship (Europe) Ltd with responsibility for building NYK's RORO business in Europeas well as increasing NYK Group's activities.

With headquarters in Tokyo, the NYK Group operates out of 230 world wide locations and employs approx 55,000 people. The company owns 838 vessels plus cargo aircraft, trucks and warehouses.

Svein spearheaded the purchase of a Belgian car terminal in 2002. He now chairs the company, whose Zeebrugge terminal is amongst the largest in the world, handling three million vehicles annually. Svein is determined to make the terminal a state-of-the-art facility and the most environmental of its kind, using solar and wind-turbine technology.

Svein was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of NYK Group Europe Ltd in 2008. In 2010 he initiated talks with Knutsen OAS which led to the joint-venture Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers (KNOT), which he now chairs. KNOT is the world's second largest shuttle tanker company.
