Would shippers please note that there is an additional requirement to provide information on marine pollutants for certain generic, as well as N.O.S, entries in the Code. IMDG Code amendment 34 is mandatory from 01 Jan 2010. NYK will be implementing IMDG code amendment 34 from 09 Nov 2009 and will therefore be requesting shippers to provide this information.

We quote the relevant section for your information.

3.1.2.9

Marine Pollutants

3.1.2.9.1

For generic or "not otherwise specified" (N.O.S.) entries, the Proper Shipping Name shall be supplemented with the recognized chemical name of the marine pollutant.

3.1.2.9.2

Examples illustrating the selection of the Proper Shipping Name supplemented with the recognized technical name of goods for such entries are indicated below:

UN 1993, FLAMMABLE LIQUID, N.O.S. (propyl acetate, di-n-butyltin-di-2-ethylhexanoate), class 3 PG III (50°C c.c.) MARINE POLLUTANT

UN 1263, PAINT (triethylbenzene), class 3 PG III (27°C c.c.), MARINE POLLUTANT

FOR GENERIC ITEMS SUCH AS PAINT THIS IS AN ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT TO STATE THE RECOGNISED CHEMICAL NAME GIVING RISE TO THE MARINE POLLUTANT.

If you wish to ship generic items that are also classified as Marine Pollutants you must identify the chemical giving rise to the Marine Pollutant.

We list below the most common generic UN numbers to which this regulation applies. It is only indicative and there are other UN numbers that are covered by this requirement. It is the duty of the consignor to declare this information.

UN 1133      IMO3           Adhesives

1169              3                   Extracts Aromatic Liquid

1197              3                   Extracts Flavouring Liquid

1263              3                   Paint

1266              3                   Perfumery products

1866              3                   Resin Solution

If the generic item is not a marine pollutant there is no need to supplement the proper shipping name with the recognised chemical name.

Would all shippers please ensure that they comply with this regulation and provide NYK with the full details when making a booking.

This information is also required to be shown on the Dangerous Goods Transport Document/Container Packing Certificate.

Please note without this information we will be unable to process your booking and failure to describe these items correctly on the dangerous goods transport document/container packing certificate will result in short shipment of your containers.

We thank shippers for their cooperation.
