The launch of the NYK ALTAIR highlights NYK's ongoing commitment to environmentally friendly global transportation.

Despite the prevailing economic headwinds, NYK continues its investment of 70 billion yen* over six years in the development of innovative environmental technology.

The NYK ALTAIR incorporates some innovative developments in engine design. She is fitted with a DU-Wartsila RT FLEX 96C propulsion engine. The environmental advantages of this engine are:

  • Smokeless operation at all running speeds
  • Lower fuel consumption than conventional engines
  • Reduced Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions
  • High-efficiency waste heat recovery

The vessel has recently made her maiden call to Europe, arriving in Hamburg at the weekend. NYK's previous vessel named NYK ALTAIR was launched in 1994. At the time, her 4,743 TEU capacity made her the largest containership in Japan.

The new NYK ALTAIR follows NYK's introduction of the award-winning AURIGA LEADER and the unveiling of the company's concept ship, NYK SUPER ECO SHIP 2030.
