* SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)

The ???2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development??? was adopted at the U.N. Summit in September 2015 and established SDGs to realize a global society by 2030. In Japan, a department to promote SDGs was launched in May 2016 and comprises the prime minister (as general manager) and all Cabinet ministers.

On August 4 as part of the company???s Remember Naka-no-Se Campaign,* NYK conducted a crisis-response drill based on the scenario of a serious accident occurring on an NYK-owned and operated LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) carrier.

NYK, with the cooperation from the Maritime Bureau within Japan???s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), the 3rd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters of Japan, the Maritime Disaster Prevention Center (MDPC), and related parties made this drill more realistic and practical than before. NYK chose oil spill as the drill scenario to prevent the lessons of the Diamond Grace accident from fading away 20 years after its occurrence. During the drill, NYK???s crisis-management headquarters simulated timely press releases and reconfirmed the importance of immediate and correct information disclosure to the public.

A summary of the drill is provided below.

Situation

A blackout had occurred on an LPG carrier while the vessel was sailing within Tokyo Bay, making it unable to sail under its own power. After that, the vessel collided with a domestic container vessel operated by Kinkai Yusen Kaisha Ltd., an NYK group company, then followed by a fuel oil spill from the LPG carrier.

 Flow of drill

 1) NYK set up a crisis-management headquarters upon receiving an urgent report from the LPG carrier???s ship-management company about the accident.

 2) NYK reported information about the accident to MLIT???s Maritime Bureau, the Japan Coast Guard, and related parties.

 3) NYK directed the LPG carrier to stop the oil leakage, rescue the injured by coordinating with MLIT, the Japan Coast Guard, the MDPC, and related parties.

 4) NYK made press releases as the situation progressed and held a mock press conference where NYK managing corporate officer Akira Kono and NYK managing corporate officer Tomoyuki Koyama explained the accident to the press.

NYK will further advance its safety management systems, positioning navigational safety as one of its most important tasks, and will aim to be a leading company in the safety field.

* Remember Naka-no-Se Campaign

This campaign has been conducted every year to remind NYK Group members of the importance of safe operations and to ensure that lessons remain learnt from the oil spill that occurred in July 1997 from VLCC Diamond Grace.

As a part of the NYK Mirai Project,* NYK sponsored a booth at the summer 2017 'Manabi no Fes' (Festival of Learning) on August 2 at the Japan Science Foundation's museum in central Tokyo.

This event was organized by the Mainichi Shimbun, one of Japan's major newspapers, to provide children with the opportunity to learn about jobs at companies that might not be familiar to the children. Thirty-seven companies and organizations exhibited at the event, which was attended by about 1,800 children and parents chosen by lot.

This was the second 'Manabi no Fes' for NYK, and this time the company conducted classes about oceangoing ships and seafarers' onboard duties, administered quizzes about the ships, and gave the children the opportunity to navigate a car carrier via a ship-handling simulator.

Many children enjoyed the simulator challenge of piloting a ship through Tokyo Bay and the Singapore Strait, both of which are known to be areas of heavy vessel traffic. And parents asked many questions about the process of becoming a seafarer.

A photo area was set up and cosponsored by the All Japan Seamen's Union and the International Mariners Management Association of Japan, and many children enjoyed interacting with the J-Crew Project's mascots and being photographed wearing a captain's uniform.

The company looks forward to continuing the NYK Mirai Project to encourage interest in seafaring among children.

* NYK Mirai Project

This project consists of a series of activities that nurture greater awareness of maritime affairs and the seafaring life among Japan's youth so that they can develop interest in the maritime industry and consider careers at shipping companies. The project was launched at the end of 2014.
