On November 14 at NYK???s 11th Environmental Management Conference in Tokyo, four companies were recognized for their improvement of company value. The four ??? Asahi Shipping Co. Ltd. (head office: Tokyo; president: Norio Tanabe), UNI-X Corporation (head office: Tokyo; president: Mitsuo Tsubota), NYK Trading Corporation (head office: Tokyo; president: Keiji Tsuchiya), and Yusen Logistics Co. Ltd. (head office: Tokyo; president: Kenji Mizushima) ??? were selected from among 46 domestic NYK Group companies.

NYK holds this conference once a year with NYK Group companies to share information on environmental practices and strengthen environmental management. The four recognized group companies were highly commended for connecting their environmental measures to their business activities. Details of the measures are provided below.

The conference participants were also captivated by a presentation by Mizuho Information & Research Institute Inc. representatives, who spoke about the institute???s initiatives for climate change after the Paris Agreement.

NYK continues to enhance its activities to reduce the environmental impact of the entire NYK Group. In fact, by fiscal 2018 the company is striving to cut CO2 emissions by 15% over the levels recorded in fiscal 2010 by improving the fuel efficiency of the company???s ships. NYK is also aiming to be an advanced company in the safety and environmental fields through the introduction of electricity-saving equipment and power-saving activities.

Asahi Shipping Co. Ltd.

Activity: Development of a binary cycle power generation system that makes use of exhaust heat

Details: Together with Kobe Steel Ltd. and Miura Co. Ltd., Asahi Shipping Co. Ltd. jointly developed a system that generates electricity from the exhaust heat emitted by the marine engine's air cooler. The system reduced CO2 emissions by 2.3 percent during an installation test conducted on one of Asahi Shipping???s vessels.

UNI-X Corporation

Activity: Development and sales of ClassNK-approved LEDs for port terminals

Details: Through the joint development and sales of port-terminal LEDs together with Stanley Electric Co. Ltd., UNI-X Corporation was able to reduce power consumption and CO2 emissions by about 66 percent compared with normal sodium-vapor lamps. In addition to reducing environmental loads, the LEDs improve visibility, resulting in safer and more reliable work environments.

NYK Trading Corporation

Activity: Development and sales of the ULTY-V coal boiler control optimization system

Details: ULTY-V has been able to reduce fuel consumption by up to 1.67 percent by stabilizing plant operations. The system received the 45th Sasaki Award from Japan Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry for the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Yusen Logistics Co. Ltd.

Activity: Delivery of optimal temperature-controlled international transportation solutions using multi-functional insulated box

Details: Yusen Logistics Co. Ltd. conducted joint research with Dai Nippon Printing Co. Ltd. into a multifunctional insulated box that features superior insulation and airtight seals. Used for cargo susceptible to sudden temperature rises and falls, this box can be loaded together with non-refrigerated cargo without the use of refrigerated trucks and containers. In addition, collecting and reusing the boxes reduces environmental loads.

On November 11, the NYK-TDG Maritime Academy (NTMA), which is located in the suburbs of Manila and jointly run by NYK and the Transnational Diversified Group (TDG),* proudly graduated the 152 students comprising the academy???s Class of 2017.

NYK president Tadaaki Naito and TDG chairman J. Roberto C. Delgado, in addition to invited guests that included Philippines Transportation Secretary Arthur P. Tugade, participated in the graduation ceremony for the students, all of whom had enrolled in 2013.

President Naito encouraged the students in his commencement address by saying, ???You will be working in an environment that requires nothing less than your full attention. You will occasionally encounter challenges, but I hope that you make use of your NTMA experience to respond appropriately and thus maintain customer trust and ensure safe delivery. Using the NYK Group Values, the 3 I???s (integrity, innovation, intensity), let???s overcome together a world that requires creative responses to dramatic change.???

The day after the ceremony, a dialogue was held between NTMA graduates currently working on NYK Group???operated ships and NYK and TDG management, and a number of insightful opinions were exchanged.

NYK was the first Japanese company to establish a maritime academy in the Philippines, and NTMA is currently celebrating its 10th anniversary since opening in 2007. The academy strives to produce high quality seafarers, and has established a student loan program for students who might find it financially challenging to pursue such a degree. In fact, the state examination pass rate for certification as a marine officer is 100 percent. NTMA has been highly evaluated as a maritime school and was one of the first maritime academies to be recognized in 2011 by Japan???s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism under a new certification program for graduates of overseas maritime academies. A total of 828 students have graduated from NTMA since the academy opened, and most graduates are actively engaged as officers or engineers on NYK-operated ships.

NYK will continue its effort to improve both the quality and quantity of Filipino seafarers as executive candidates within the NYK Group.

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (head office: Tokyo; president: Tadaaki Naito; NYK), MTI Co., Ltd. (an NYK Group company; head office: Tokyo; president: Yasuo Tanaka; MTI), and Japan Engine Corporation (head office: Hyogo; president: Michio Shimizu; J-ENG) have seen progress in their joint research to improve safety and optimize maintenance for marine engines.

The three companies began their research in December 2016 with the aim to pursue further safety and economic efficiency by taking advantage of operational big data resulting from collaborative work among engine manufacturers and users.

Since the start of the project, NYK, MTI, and the engine maker J-ENG have shared, monitored, and analyzed operational big data from SIMS2, a second generation ship information management system developed by NYK and MTI and allowing data-sharing among workplaces on land and sea in real time, including detailed hourly updates on shipping operations, data related to fuel consumption, and machinery condition.

During the project, some problems that may have resulted in serious engine damage have been discovered at an early stage, thus confirming that this joint research could contribute to safer operations.

In the next stage, the companies will develop a more advanced accident prevention system by combining J-ENG???s expertise, which includes developing, manufacturing, and after-sales service, with the NYK Group???s efforts to identify potential problems and prevent breakdowns in advance.

In addition, by incorporating J-ENG's technical expertise into the NYK Group???s condition diagnosis, which uses big data to examine the condition of the inside of a combustion chamber, the quality of maintenance will be improved and its frequency will be optimized as a shift is made from conventional time-based maintenance to condition-based maintenance.

The NYK Group collaborates with shipbuilding companies, equipment manufacturers, universities, and research institutes to make use of big data in innovative solutions that further enhance the safety of vessels.

J-ENG offers analyses of ship data to help customers to operate and prevent accidents in advance, and then feeds back user-derived data for its own design and development of UE engines* to improve reliability and performance.

The three companies will continue their efforts for improved safety and economic transport by taking advantage of operational big data and each company???s expertise.

* UE engine

Among the three major brands of low-speed marine diesel engines, the UE engine is the only Japanese brand, and is completely developed, designed, manufactured, marketed, and serviced by J-ENG.
